I’ve decided to bring these lessons, experiences, and insights to life through the “Mastering the Journey” newsletter which will be shared on a weekly basis.
This newsletter talks about my journey as an entrepreneur, my experiences empowering other entrepreneurs and insights gained through my pursuit of contributing to the building of legacy business in the South African SME landscape.
I thought it would be great for us to first delve into our understanding of the word “Mastery” as this is the one thing that helped evolve my perspective on what an entrepreneurship journey should look like.
The Collins dictionary provides these four definitions for the word “Mastery”.
- full commander understanding of a subject
- outstanding skill; expertise
- the power of command; control
- victor superiority
For so many years I thought that mastery was all about getting something right, excelling in what you do or achieving great results. However, in the past few years of running my business, I’ve come to realise that mastery is the thing that happens way before we achieve results. I agree with the definition given by Collins dictionary because I’ve come to learn that to master something you must understand what you’re doing, have skills and expertise required for it, be in control and ultimately achieve superiority.
The thing about mastery in anything is that there is no set destination, it is not just about the results and there is no point where you really feel that you have arrived. However, it is in the things we do well consistently that we see mastery at work.
